Conductor, countertenor and pianist Alexander Turner began his musical journey as a chorister at Southwell Minster (Nottinghamshire). Following choral scholarships there and at Norwich Cathedral, he studied at Royal Holloway, University of London, gaining a prize-winning first-class degree. He has performed across the UK as a soloist in Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s Passions and Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, as well as internationally with professional choirs including the Sixteen, Sestina and Siglo de Oro. He has also been a member of the choir of New College Oxford, with whom he appeared as a soloist at Wigmore Hall, and continues to sing with the choirs of St. Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey.
Increasingly in demand as a conductor, Alex is gaining a reputation for his choir-training skills, dynamic programming and community engagement. He has directed large-scale works by Duruflé, Jonathan Dove, Britten and Handel, and has conducted premiere performances of works he has commissioned by Lizzy Hardy and Anna Semple. Alex is currently Director of Music at All Saints’ Church, Putney, musical director of Stanmore Choral Society, and as of 2024, Richmond Chamber Choir.
He combines these whilst studying for a Master’s degree in Choral Conducting at the Royal Academy of Music where he is generously supported by the Academy and Royal College of Organists.
